You start with “Water-soluble graphite is a relatively new addition to the world of drawing materials.”
Well, the Caran d’Ache Technalo pencil was the first and it was commercialized in 1960.
It’s still among the best, up there with Staedtler and Faber-Castell. ArtGraf doesn’t make pencils anymore: their water-soluble sticks are the darkest, but are not convenient for drawing —and the essence of water-soluble graphite is “draw first, then apply water with a brush”, with a result that’s neither a drawing nor a painting…

There is a unique quality to graphite, it has a visual difference as well as a textural to impact. I have developed a partnership with gesso and water-soluble graphite that just sings for me.
