Drawing Together Episode 94: Chair (with pen)
this episode is Part of the Drawing Together live video series – learn more here
Today’s drawing is more than a little terrifying to me. I’m experimenting with pen and ink, drawing this cool old chair. I’m going to try this without a pencil or eraser! Follow along using this reference image: Reference Image
Today, I’m working with:
- Cotton Rag Drawing Paper (Legion Stonehenge)
- Derwent Line Maker Pens

I had trouble with the perspective, but enjoyed drawing along. The best (and worst) thing about drawing with ink is it’s permanence. Embrace your mistakes, learn, and move on.
Was a lot a fun! This was my second drawing after taking a break once school started. Excited to get back into drawing every week! I’ve done ink drawings before and always liked them. This one was definitely challenge and I’m eager to get out my ink pens again!
I enjoyed Drawing this one.
I wasn’t able to do the live for this lesson. I have done small drawings in ink but never have done anything in this size. I wasn’t as intimidate doing the lesson like I thought I might be. Really enjoyed working in pen and looking forward doing more in ink in a large scale. I did have some mistakes like the buttons not be lighter and there is one too many of them. Also to much of of a shadow on the back of the couch on the right side. Not sure of any other mistakes but I’ m pretty pleased with it otherwise. Thanks again Scott for another wonderful lesson. I look forward to doing many more of them. I have been gaining alot more confidence on expanding my mediums.

It’s great to see the difference between these two versions. They look great!
Keep at it, Brenda. This is looking great!
Very nice work!
Thank you, Adele! This is wonderful. It’s great to see you drawing again!
Oh my boy, was that a challenge!
I wanted to tear up the sketch umpteen times. I have never drawn with pens before. Quite dissatisfied, I leave it that way and will continue to draw with the pens.
Kind regards Pia
I havent drawn for months so decided to give it a bash. Not too happy with the results but as you say it is the process not the finished product. Went with the ole graphite cause I was game to try with a pen after not drawing for so long. Thanks for a great lesson , you are always a pleasure to watch.
This I did with Scott Mayer on Youtube
I totally suck at perspective, but it was great inspiration to try ink. Thank you, Scott!
Wow this was different. Top one is a fine rollerball pen. I had avoided pen drawing because you can’t erase. Someone mentioned in chat using colored pencils over charcoal so I tried that too. They were different brands and the waxier ones were harder to layer more charcoal on top.
This looks great, Claude. I appreciate the feedback! There’s a beautiful quality of light in your drawing, especially where the seatback falls into shadow. I may try to do more drawings with pen/ink!
Here is the first one in gray.
Very nice work with this, Vickie! I love the variety of marks here.
There’s a beautiful quality to these marks, Tammy. I see the blotches you’re talking about, but I think they add a nice character to it.
Photo was missing in action. I decided to post two photos, the final version as first, and the gray sketch as second.
Wonderful work, Nathalie. This looks great. I can see how you adapted your work as you observed the effects of the pen and it looks great. Very nice!
Thank you for this feedback! I’ll try to work some more pen/ink lessons into the mix.
Thank you Scott for a change in technique. I have not used pen for a while and forgot how much fun it is. Really enjoy it. Wouldn’t mind more sessions using pen.
11×14, Stonehenge Legion, acid free, 100% cotton paper; Microns , and Y & C calligraphy pen. Start drawing using light gray pen from the start, than proceed with the black Microns, and calligraphy pens.
Hello and Thank you for this live learning session. It is the second time that I attend to one of those but not the last! I’ve learn a lot and with your help and coaching I finally tried ink pen. I made plenty of mistakes but I learned. At the beginning I didn’t get that it was better to use a gray pen instead of a black one and a thinner pen instead of a 0.5. As a result I end up with a very bold and uncontrolled drawing but okay for a first time. Thanks again Nathalie
It was so hard. My pen left a few globs. Used a Pentel Pointliner. It didn’t like sideways too much. Lol. I got the closest arm messed up but I continued anyway.
Using Canson Montval watercolor paper and the uniball elite pen,
It was fun! Thanks Scott

Now that was a curve ball: pen and ink!!!! Never done that before! I grabbed my fountain pen and away we went. Thank for a truly novel experience . You have a way of providing very meaningful experiences in a truly enjoyable manner. Thank you very much for this first!
