In this two part video, Chris Cozen explores surfaces and textures available to acrylic artists using a variety of painting techniques and tools. In the first part, you’ll learn painting techniques using paper, synthetic surfaces such as Tyvek and Plexiglass, and Gessos and gels to learn the ways different surfaces react to acrylic paint. In part two, you’ll explore ways of adding textures to your surfaces, from using color to create a visual pattern, layering with stencils and stamps, and building a collage using torn paper. By the end of this video, you’ll be able to put it all together to create patterns of shapes and compositions that will please the eye as well as the fingers.
Follow these acrylic painting lessons:
Create a structured, textural surface by brayering paint onto an acrylic paper surface.
Learn how to work in reverse with layering colors on Plexiglas.
Use matte medium and gel gloss to seal writing and preserve previous colors on a surface so they’ll continue to shine through.
Create a visually textured surface with patches of color, mixing and blending to create interest
And more!
Preview Abstract Art Explorations: 17 Acrylic Painting Techniques now to learn how to use transparent acrylics to create a sheer wash on acrylic paper. You can also use stencils on Tyvek to create and increase the structure of a painting from the first layer. Finally, learn how to use torn paper and paint in a collage to create different levels of texture.

So rich in ideas! It will keep me experimenting with new processes for months. There were a couple of references to previous videos or books that I hadn’t seen/read and so that left me with missing pieces in the explanation but that faded into insignificance alongside all of the great ideas and approaches presented.

Chris gives lots of ideas for surfaces, textures, creating backgrounds, and different acrylic paints and mediums. Also talks about creating structure in your piece and how layers of paint interact. I am inspired to see what I can create!

Fantastic! One question was: in collage, do you use glue to add paper or cheesecloth etc, or do you just use the stickiness of the mediums?

I just loved this video. I could probably watch it over and over again and continue to pick up bits of information. The video was nicely paced. She talked about and explained everything she did and why she did it. She even brought up the"artist's eye" which I found very informative. Will purchase more of her videos.

I love the explorations but I would like to see how she applied these techniques in final pieces or how others may have applied them. Also, different final pieces using the same process. This would be helpful.

I enjoy watching Chris Cozen so much that I am recommending Artistsnetwork.tv because of her videos. She is so natural and calm, explains everything so well. Her calm easy instruction and tricks get me so excited and make me realize that I can do these projects too! I just gave my daughter the link to this site as she is learning painting and mixed media. When I started out several years ago I watched everything I could on YouTube...this is SO much nicer. I think most artists learn and do so much better by watching, and Chris Cozen is a lady I would never tire of watching!
Thank you Chris. I am really enjoying myself and even starting a new project first thing in the morning!

Chris Cozen has a calm, easy-going painting style that readily puts her students at ease. Most teachers when presenting many techniques at once can often overwhelm and confuse a novice. Not Chris. She presents with simple,step-by-step instructions that are easy to understand. I finished her video feeling confident and excited to put to use many of her useful and exciting techniques.

Another video jam packed with information. I think all of Chris's videos are great and have found them invaluable as someone just starting out working in Acrylics, Multi Media and Abstract styles and not knowing where to start....except now I do :)
